Environment day Observed :
World Environment Day is celebrated every
year on June 05. The event is a United Nations initiative to increase
worldwide awareness on environmental issues to help motivate individual
and political action.
Drylands cover more than 40 percent of Earth’s surface and are
home to a third of the world’s population. People who make their home in
drylands live in a fragile ecosystem and are more vulnerable than most
other people to changes in climate and desertification—a process of land
degradation in which semi-arid areas are transformed into deserts. The
World Environment Day is a people’s event and can be observed in
innumerable ways to draw attention to wide range of environmental
issues.
World Environment Day was observed at Cachar
Paper Mill, Nagaon Paper Mill and at the Housing Complex at Salt Lake,
Kolkata. Prior to the D-Day, both the Mills
witnessed hectic activities in preparing for the event. The clean up
drive washed afresh with intermittent pre-monsoon rain coincided with
the blooming of flowers of various hues. This along with the natural
green foliage added extra sheen to the perfectly well manicured gardens.
Ceremonial planting of saplings were held in the Mill’s premises, the
Township, the Kendriya Vidyalaya grounds and in the Housing Complex at
Salt Lake, Kolkata. Leaflets and badges pledging the cause for
protection of environment were distributed amongst the employees and school children.
